OtoCube the electro-acoustical test box for cochlear implant users

The OtoCube is a groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind instrument for precision programming and fitting of cochlear implants. The OtoCube  guarantees the maximum potential of your cochlear implant’s ability to enhance your hearing! Considering the fact that there are hundreds, possibly even thousands of CI program combinations possible, finding the best combination of settings to achieve optimum hearing quality for each patient can be impossible. But with the OtoCube, the performance of any CI can be programmed as close to perfect as possible, allowing patients to hear significantly more clearly with their existing device! 

The OtoCube is the first and only tool to use computer technology (Neural / Symbian network) in a calibrated, sound treated box and in combination with a class-1 measuring tool to correctly estimate the CI’s programming outcome. The OtoCube’s intuitive software calibrates the box before measurements, remembers all results of past fittings per patient, and compares the outcome with other patient results in the database.  OtoCube takes advantage of the knowledge of many experts to provide a new breakthrough in cochlear implant fitting! The results in every clinic can be compared and given the same (maximum) result in hearing.

OtoCube is a desktop electro-acoustical test box that enables audiologists to perform precision measurements and tests on cochlear implants using a soundproofed calibrated box. The CI sound processor and microphone are placed in a small acoustical chamber within the unit’s calibrated box and connected to the patient via an extension cable to the cochlear implant’s transmitter system. Once the test stimuli is presented to the CI processor in the acoustically insulated OtoCube, CI-patients can be tested on their perception of “speech in noise” under optimal testing conditions with excellent precision. The OtoCube has been tested by prestigious clinics in Belgium, Germany and Spain. With special software, the OtoCube can also be used as a fitting assistant to help the audiologist program cochlear implants

The insulation characteristics of the OtoCube comply with the ISO norms for clinical audio logical practice and is therefore suitable to be used in normal clinical settings. OtoCube reduces ambient noise within the test box to acceptable levels as described in the American National Standard (ANSI), British Standard (BSI), European Standard (EN) and International Standard (ISO).

Psycho-acoustical stimuli have typical intensities varying from 10 to 120 dB SPL. These intensities also vary with the spectral content (ranging from 125 to 8000 Hz) and according to equal-loudness curves.

The OtoCube is designed to produce acoustical stimuli in a small anechoic test room in the box. With a class D amplifier and matching loudspeaker in the OtoCube box, an exact acoustic sound field of the electric input signal produced by software on a laptop is replicated and digitally sent to the box’s 24 bit soundcard. Before performing a CI test, the box is calibrated with the monitoring class-1 microphone and the known factory calibration of the complete measuring system (soundcard – amplifier – loudspeaker – anechoic test room specifications – microphone.) The produced acoustical stimuli in the box are, therefore, exactly the same as intended and produced by the software in intensity, frequency and phase.

The OtoCube can be used as a fast and reliable aid for audiologists while programming cochlear implants, with the help of special software (Fitting to Outcomes Expert, or FOX®). The automated fitting procedure contributes to a reduction in the length of fitting time needed, and in achieving better outcomes by introducing deterministic bottom-up artificial intelligence.

The OtoCube can also be used for reliable testing of modern electronic hearing aids, as well as microphones and earphones.
